PGT Construction in Montclair, CA | Elmwood Contractors
We provide independent PGT window and sliding door installation, repair, and retrofit service across Montclair. Elmwood Contractors is not an authorized PGT dealer, and we don’t touch the factory warranty. What we do is know PGT’s product line well enough to size, flash, and reframe it correctly for Montclair’s built-out postwar tracts, where almost every opening is original, undersized, and needs real attention before a new unit goes in. Call (866) 253-8554 to talk through what you’re dealing with.
Why Montclair Residents Choose Us for PGT Service
Montclair’s housing is mostly late-1940s through 1960s single-story stucco, which means window work here is retrofit work, not new construction. We’ve been doing that kind of job long enough to know how PGT units behave when they’re set into a 60-year-old rough opening with settling, dry rot, and original flashing that predates modern waterproofing practice. Nolan Shepherd, our owner, grew up in Fullerton’s Sunny Hills, where the late-’60s houses on his street taught him early which openings were going to cause trouble decades later. That carries over to every PGT install we touch in Montclair. We use OEM PGT parts when they’re available and the existing frame is worth saving, and we say so plainly when the smarter move is replacement. You get a straight answer about your specific opening, not a salesman’s script.

Common PGT Construction Problems We Solve in Montclair
- Warped vinyl frames on south- and west-facing walls. Montclair’s summer surface temperatures spike hard on those exposures, and PGT vinyl sashes can distort just enough to stop sealing against the jamb. Air and water infiltration follow, and a caulk bead won’t fix it. We assess whether the frame is salvageable or the sash needs replacing.
- Degraded weatherstripping and glazing gaskets on original PGT aluminum sliders. Santa Ana wind events punish the windward side of the house, and 40-year-old gaskets let dust through and rattle in the wind. Homeowners sometimes assume the whole frame is bad, but fresh OEM gasketing often brings these units back to tight.
- Slider roller and track wear on PGT aluminum doors. In Montclair’s 1950s and 60s tract homes, the slab under the door opening has often settled, so the door drags, sags, and the latch stops lining up. Replacing the rollers alone won’t solve it if the opening is out of square, so we check the rough opening before ordering parts.
- Fogged double-pane PGT glass. When the original install predated modern flashing, moisture working into the rough opening breaks down the seal. New glass is sometimes enough, but if the rough opening is holding water, we find and fix that first.
- Original aluminum PGT frames with sound frames but failed hardware. Locks, keepers, and sash hardware on older PGT units wear out. If the frame profile is still square and true, we source the right hardware rather than pushing a premature full replacement.
PGT Service in Montclair: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Montclair is a built-out city of roughly 38,000, and the housing stock reflects its postwar origin almost block by block. The lots off Monte Vista Avenue and the streets east of Central are small, shallow, and platted for single-story tract homes, much like the areas we cover with our PGT service in Upland. PGT window work here is nearly always a replacement into an original opening that was never intended for modern impact-rated glass. That’s the real crux of window work in Montclair: it’s not that you can’t get the right unit, it’s that the opening needs reframing, re-flashing, and often a larger header before the unit can sit right. We plan for that from the first measurement, which is why our quotes in Montclair rarely surprise anyone once the job starts.
PGT Models & Products We Service in Montclair
We work across the PGT lineup: WinGuard Aluminum, WinGuard Vinyl, EnergyVue insulated vinyl, and the Premier/Architectural Series aluminum frames. On Montclair homes where original aluminum sliders from the tract era are still in place, parts like sashes, rollers, locks, and gaskets can be OEM when the profile still exists. When PGT has discontinued the profile, we’ll tell you that before ordering anything, and we’ll explain what a quality aftermarket alternative looks like for the specific door or window. Our approach with PGT units is repair-first when the frame is sound, replace when the frame or rough opening is compromised. We don’t push a full replacement because it’s easier for us.

AfterPGT Service Pricing in Montclair
PGT work here falls into a few predictable buckets. A full window replacement in Montclair typically runs $4,500 to $15,000 depending on the number of openings and the condition of the rough framing. Impact window installation steps up to $8,000 to $25,000. Some homeowners fold PGT window replacement into a larger home addition, which runs $45,000 to $130,000 all in. FAQs – PGT Construction in Montclair
Yes, if the frame is square and the profile is still supported, we can replace just the glass, sash, or hardware on many PGT units. If the rough opening has settled or the frame is distorted, a patch job won’t last, and we’ll tell you that directly. Call (866) 253-8554 and we’ll take a look before you spend anything.
It’s not normal, but it’s common in Montclair on south- and west-facing walls that take full afternoon heat. The vinyl can distort enough to break the seal against the jamb. Whether it’s the sash or the frame determines whether we repair or replace.
Only if you want the storm protection and the insurance difference. Montclair isn’t in a mandatory wind-borne debris zone, but Santa Ana winds and the dry-season fire risk make impact-rated units a serious consideration for many homeowners here. We’ll show you the cost difference versus standard insulated PGT glass and let you decide.
Yes, and that’s the most efficient way to do it. While we’re already opening walls and pulling permits for a kitchen or bath remodel, replacing the original windows in those rooms with properly flashed PGT units adds little to the schedule, just as our PGT service in Ontario handles similar retrofit sequencing. We sequence the window work with the rough framing so the job moves cleanly.
Yes, if the rough opening is being modified, the window size changes, or any structural reframing is involved, Montclair requires a permit. A straight same-size replacement may not. We pull permits when they’re required and don’t make the homeowner chase paperwork. Call (866) 253-8554 for the details on your specific job.
